Callantsoog is one of the oldest seasideresorts of Holland. The village (2600 inhabitants) knows two previous versions which have been devoured by the sea. The Island Oghe was abandoned by its inhabitants when shifting dunes and the shifting coastline, swept away the houses. In 1570 the village was struck by All Saints Flood.
The church bell survived both disasters and nowadays can be found in a local church. An exhibition farm Auntie Jaantje is an exhibition about combing the beach, an important additional income to the former population. The name Callantsoog is probably based on the first name Karl or the friese name Kalle. The second part of the name points at corruption of ing or inga. Ing can be a suffix to the creation of personal names.Kalling is somehow related to Kallen-Kallens. The third part of the name "Eye"means island.
Nowadays Callantsoog is an important seaside resort. In 2005 and previous years Callantsoog received the Blue Flag. The Blue Flag is an award granted for clean and safe beaches.
Callantsoog has a very pleasant centre, where you can find lots of different shops, terraces and a diversity of restaurants. Behind the dunes is a place where you can sunbathe, play , swim, fly kites, or ride horses without being disturbed, and where is the air fresher and cleaner than by the sea?
Sun, sea, sand: so much to enjoy.
Compared to the rest of the Netherlands, this region has the least rainfall and the most sunshine. While the sea is very enticing on the many sunny days in summer, beach walkers and surfers will be impressed by huge waves in the spring and autumn.
The site is immediately adjacent to an area of forest and heath where you can walk or cycle on a rural road to the village. The colourful fields of tulips and countless options for cycling are a true challenge to many.
This varied part of the Netherlands offers something for everyone in any weather, making it worth a visit!
Stolpboerderij 'Tante Jaantje'
The farm is a 'Westfriese duinstolp' from a couple of centuries ago. There are only a few of these 'duinstolpen' left in the northern dunes territory, more so, our 'stolp'is probably the last one which is in such an authentic state. The 'stolp' with farmyard shows wonderfully how the ancient habitants of these poor region lived and worked. In this farm a lot of wood from shipwrecks have been used.
Natuurreservaat 'Het Zwanenwater'
The "Zwanenwater"is a wildlife sanctuary found on the south side of Callantsoog. The Zwanenwater is 580 hectares with two big lakes, swampland, ponds, heath land and a forest. It is famous for its stork colony. There are lots of special plants like orchids, flowers and herbs. It is also breeding ground for more than 70 different kinds of birds. Two walks can be made. In the period May till the beginning of August several guided field trips are being organised. This wildlife sanctuary is supervised by the organisation "Natuurmonumenten".
Many activities are organised for the tourists and habitants of Callantsoog, both grownups and youngsters. On the Dorpssquare you can enjow nice restaurants, shops and pavement cafes.
